A short review of the Winner Bracket and an interview of a player that I'd like to nickname "The Bulldozer" or "Demolition Man"

It's been a long time...

I did not write anything for nearly 3 months. Among others things, I have to admit that no event really impassioned me since Nostalgia Battlefield : seeing 3 old legends playing BO1 in a Banana non-tournament do not quite excite me. And the WCA roller coaster of emotions that ended derailing and crashing thousand of fans' hope for a new exciting season nearly sealed the coffin for me.

But thankfully Netease was there and decided to give 4 direct slots to the Westerners! We came from sharing qualification spots with Koreans on Netease to having our own fair qualifier with 25% of the slots. This was a strong gesture toward us. And they invited me into the organization of the Qualifiers which really touched me. So here I am back again for some articles!

Happy the demolition man

As long as he decided to participate, we all expected Happy to qualify, and be the first to do so. Coming from the bottom of the prequalifier - due to his now usual hesitations into registering or not - he ended the full session with a 15-1 record.

On top of having to prequalify, he had I believe the toughest possible path into the main qualifier, having to beat the last two WCA representatives (ever?) Orcworker 2-0 and Foggy 3-0 in final.

Sandwiched between those two came Hawk with the strongest opposition. He won game 1 with a very smart tank drop into the gold mine and gave some challenge into game 3 as well. Albeit that was not enough to send the ultra favorite Undead into the Loser bracket.

The tank drop that nearly changed it all

The only real surprise that David Mente's foresight calculator did not predict is Rudan losing 1-2 to a quarter active TomasG in the 1st round. This is a relevant result since TomasG assures an invitational spot in the next qualifier in case of elimination, while Rudan will have to beat Sonik to secure it.

What was predicted

What happened!

The American representative  Hunter seemed totally outplayed by Hawk in the first face-off. He needs to step his game up to avoid total elimination against Orcworker. I'd like to make the foresight calculator lie and see the 0,1% guy make it to the final two tbh : anything can happen in WC3!

Foggy being in the final of the LB, we all expect him to get the second spot considering his 3rd place in the last GCS tournament. We will see how it goes!

Short interview with Happy

Hello Happy and congratulations for your qualification!

1- In the first place you decided not to participate into the Qualifiers then changed your mind. Can you detail why?

As i said many times on my stream before and will say now - I had no wish to play it myself. So its plain and simple - money. People wanted to see me there, so they support (donate) more.

2- This lead to you playing the Open Qualifier to reach the final 8. You preferred to qualify for it instead of being invited?

I declined my direct invite to second stage of Qualifiers at first. Considering my slot already had been given to other player [to Sonik], I went on to play first stage of qualifiers. Obviously it would be better to skip first qualifiers. On the other hand, it just gave me "extra content" for my stream.

3- Hawk's match was probably the closest serie. Can you talk about this one?

I let my hero get surrounded too easy in early game in game 1 & 3, so it was more difficult. Also, first game went really bad from me. At one point i forgot to rebuild an Acolyte, so i was mining with 4 for a while.

4- You bulldozed your way to victory with a 15/1 record overall. Even Foggy seems out of options against you now?

Maybe i'm just lucky. I don't count myself neither as strong, neither as a professional player.

5- Last interview you said you did not really want to travel anymore... but this time you will right?

I should attend, though, anything can happen. I do not want to travel, just like playing in tournaments. As i answered in first question, my motivation is money (people want to see me there - more support, etc). So yeah, most likely i will be there.

Happy does not know if he is happy :)

Only Happy seems to take no interest into his crushing domination over the European scene. Motivated only by making a good living by satisfying his fanbase, Happy is undoubtedly our best shot to claim the title in China. It is thanks to him and Foggy that Netease decided to award 4 slots to Europe and America for the next event, and for that we are grateful.

The only concern I would have is about his motivation to play a long tournament in China far from his streaming habits. But the top prize is nice and should compensate many hours of streaming in donations. Happy or not, we will be supporting you Dmitry!

Fun fact #1 is that the 4 Westerners that will go to Shanghai in July will be divided in the 4 groups, taking the seed 4 in those as the supposedly weakest member of the group. Well, good luck to the Asian players that will have a seed 4 Happy in theirs!

Fun fact #2 is also that at this point, 75% of qualified players are Undeads! 120, WFZ and Happy with only Fly taking the 4th slot. This show how talented those 3 are since I am ready to bet that we will not have a single other Undead in the remaining 12 seats to be awarded. Who wanna bet?

As usual, I'd appreciate a follow up on twitter !

Happy proved once again he is one of the dumbest people to ever "shine" upon the European Warcraft 3 scene, which anyway doesn't have the fame of being full of smart and mannered people. He first declines the direct invitation, thus Effectively (pun intended) taking up one of the only 2 slots in the open qualifier, and then initially declines playing the actual qualifier and had to be literally begged to participate, and once he does qualify, he doesn't give a concrete answer if he is going to actually travel to China. One of the biggest ass clowns I have ever seen. His motivation to play reminds me very much of that of Grubby, which is of course mostly related to money, and there is nothing wrong about that (everyone needs to eat), but the difference is that Grubby is at least smart enough to try to not talk about that and not to directly say that his main motivation is money. Obviously the respect Happy has for his fan base is close to zero, and would be totally zero should they stop donating to him.

Such a fast reaction, Ugri, amazing job :) Having article in several hours after event - what a professional attitude! Although I was hoping for Foggy to take 1st quota, "bulldoze" is the best verb to describe yesterday competition. Cant wait for 2nd day, thank you!

>Comment #1 Wow, i bet if he didn't say the truth about his financial motivation you would call him a liar. To me it looks like he says what's on his mind and doesn't give a damn, that's a rare quality and that's why he has so many haters.

Since Happy has come back he has always maintained the position that he doesn't want to play travel tournaments or lans. He made it clear that he wants to stream for a living and he's done just that. The community should (and in my case is) be grateful that he has graced this tournament with this virtuoso unit control and clean macro. I'm of the opinion that Happy knows hes the best Euro out there. But deep down Happy also knows that there is a real world of Warcraft 3 out there called china and south korea. 120, Moon, Infi, Fly100% are the real boss dogs of this game and when happy goes up against them I bet he falls swiftly like the rest. Essentially what I'm saying is that Happy would rather be the absolute star of the AA Minor League Baseball team and get all the attention and some money, than be the fifth or sixth best player in the Major Leagues.

I agree with 1# Comment. Since i heard 5 times in 5 minets Happy talk about donations and money making stupid jokes about it on his stream, my will to support Happy is now close to 0. Where is the passion? Or at least clever marketing like Grubby do.

I like that u are honest Happy.Ofcurse u will travel (even if u dont like it) when there is point and money on the other side.Former pros like Happy,Grubby, Yaws really want to point that they do not want to participate in tours. I know it is easier to be a streamer, Im not an idiot :D :D Good Luck
