He has put Peru on the map of Warcraft for the World ~ but now his participation to WCA is in danger. Read his interview and learn about his last stressful days.

Going through all sort of emotions

Will Hunter reach the destination? After being drafted back into the tournament due to  feRfe's forfeit, excitement was at its peak for the Peruvian. He showed great skills during the whole WCA America competition, getting close to getting the ticket to Yinchuan directly.

feRfe resignation coming late, Hunter having no passport when he heard about it and some others hectic logistics he was not responsible of jeopardized his participation to WCA. I guess we will only know last minute for sure. His visa receiving time will be very late on friday and if he comes to China, it will be probably after games are already started, if not played. This is very upsetting.

I am writing this comment few hours before boarding my own plane to Yinchuan so I do not know what is going to happen to Hunter. Still, we discussed a lot these last days and I interviewed him before those visa issues surfaced. He deserves our attention and we are crossing fingers for him.

Hunter - The Tenth Man

Hunter, congratulations for your qualification! And thank you agreeing on this interview

1- Can you give us a little introduction? (name, age, what do you do, where do you live....)

Hi, my name is Cristopher matos, I am 27 years old. I work in a bank as an real estate executive and I live in Lima, Peru. I like also to play drums!

What were your expectations when you registered for WCA America ~ you considered yourself one of the favorites?

I did not actually register, a friend told me about the tournament. I was very busy with my work and did not pay attention to the announcement. When I've found out about the prize I was interested in participating. I knew that I could reach the last stages of the tournament.

Two Peruvians players qualified for the group stages ( Hunter and  Walter), please give us a few information on why the Peruvian scene is so active in Warcraft while it is nearly non-existent in the neighboring countries?

Before there were more competition in Latin America. Now there are only 2 or 3 countries where Warcraft is still active, Peru and Chile or Argentina as well.

I do not know many people who are actively playing Warcraft anymore now in Peru. I think there are only about 10 skilled players I know nowadays, but I remember those times in 2007/2008 when there were a lot of competition in Peru and many national tournaments where organized.

But in Peru there has always been a very special taste for this game, we always liked to compete against the Europeans and the Asians. Although our ping is not very good with the different servers we have to play on (W3arena or Netease).

Who are the best players in Peru? Can you rank them in order (1 to 4) and give a few details about them?

Well I cannot tell you exactly who are the best today, but I can tell you who are the most active : 1.- Hunter 2.-Walter 3.-Danger 4.-Nerzhul

Are you friends in real life?

Well I only know Danger and Nerzhul in person. Walter is Peruvian, but lives in Chile.

Danger and Hunter a few years ago

Where did your get your account name from?

When I started playing I did not know what nickname to chose. A friend called "Aries", a good human player, told me to use "HunteR". I liked it because it sounded s like I'd hunt them all and that's my goal to beat everyone!

Do you think that at least a Peruvian player should have been invited directly to the group stage (Longwalk, Sonkie, feRfe and Priest were ~ All from USA)

Of course, at least one should have been invited. I think I would have chosen  Danger,  Insuperable, Longwalk and feRfe

In Asia, it was criticized to give two slots to Americans for WCA : what do you say?

They have their reasons to think this way

The problem is that in Latin America we do not have the support they get for esports. We can not dedicate ourselves full time to Warcraft because if we did, from what would we live? Here you have to work hard, it's our reality.

How did you learn about your invitation to Yinchuan (feRfe had to forfeit for personal reasons)? What was your reaction? Did you hesitate about going?

It was a Saturday morning (November 26th) when Neo wrote me on skype, asking if I could go to china to replace ferfe. I felt very happy because for any Latin American player, to live an experience like this is unforgettable.

How did you organize this sudden need to go to China? Any issue with work?

I had a lot of things to do! I did not have a passport and I had to process it this week (was issued November 30th) and I had to ask for days off at my job. My boss gave me those days.

Your entourage knew about your Warcraft career? (work, family, friends)

My family knows, but they always thought it was a waste of time They do not understand that this game is a passion and a lifestyle.

During WCA America, you came from the bottom of the Qualifiers to the 3rd place, with a very short loss to Longwalk 2-3. Can you share anecdotes about some of the games you played?

There were some very interesting games. I enjoyed the first game against Longwalk on turtle rock (all mines were drained ~ Hunter played mass AOW/archers and lost). I lost the last game 2-3 because I wanted to win too fast. During the last battle, I should have waited behind my main : he only had a few bears and heroes. My mistake was going out to fight him. Those are mistakes from which one learns

This is not Lord of the Rings, this is WCA America!

I heard there was an earthquake right when you were playing Insuperable?

Yes, it is usual to have earthquakes in Peru . We had just started playing and I felt that everything  started to vibrate. I did not hesitate to stop the game and came out of the apartment hahaha! I was not really afraid, but it is always better to be careful.

Is WCA America a chance to revive Warcraft in America?

Of course, I hope that WCA will organize another Qualifiers next year. Many good players I know were not able to participate due to the lack of information like my friend Danger. I hope that next year he will be able to compete.

How much do you play Warcraft every week?

I do not play much during the week, because I'm too tired from work. The only thing that I do at night when I come back home is to shower, dine and rest. Sometimes if I can just play 2 or 3 games.  On Saturdays and Sundays I have more time to play.

Are there any American or Peruvian tournaments of Warcraft with cash prizes?

Not really, here there are not really any tournaments with cash prizes organized.  We have a community on Facebook with which we have been able to organize 1 or 2 small tournaments only.

What are your expectations for your result in China?

In fact, after I ended WCA America at the 3rd placeI stopped playing for two weeks. It's only when Neo told me that I could go to China that I started to play again.  I hope to do a good job and show you that there is talent here too.

Maybe your unknown style will be an advantage?

Maybe I do not know, I'll try to show my best.  The good thing is that I can finally play with no lag. I want to see how I will play face to face to the best players in the world.

I know they are all very good players all, but I consider that I play well too : so I will give it all!

Anything you want to say or something I should have asked?

Not really were good questions, I hope everything goes well and that people will enjoy the games in general. I thank you for the interview. I hope to meet you in China.

He wants to talk about Neo

I want to say a few words to Neo. Playing Warcraft is fun, but Neo makes you live the game intensely.

I have been on the side of those who thought that Warcraft was over. But one day I was on twitch and decided to enter to check Back2warcraft's channel.

Since then, hearing the way he lives this game... it made me feel that I must play again because the warcraft is still alive, and will live a long life.

Thanks Neo you are an example to follow for all the people who follow their dreams and who strive to reach them and who are happy with what they do. You are one of those people and you are incredible. Thank you brother for giving people the courage to see this game with love and passion and intensity!

While I was writing this, Hunter was discussing with the admins. He will apparently have a hell of a trip, and play all his games in a row right after landing without sleep... or something like that. This is not ideal, but that it is the best he can get so let's hope that flights will not be delayed!! Mr White called him "the Master of Endurance" in his WCA article, prove it to us my friend!

He wanted to post a picture with his girlfriend : they are together for 9 years and he loves her very much!

Hunter is in love

Now it is time for me to pack my luggage. Neo and Remo are in the air, Foggy already in Yinchuan. We are going to spend 10 days together to make you live WCA and GCS at the fullest : stay tuned!

If you would like to follow me on twitter, i would very much appreciate that :

My twitter coverage of WCA will be rebroadcasted on w3arena, but still a follow is appreciated!

Ugrilainen, from where do you fly to Yinchuan? On your twitter I saw Hunter's schedule of journey to WCA and it says Sunday (Gaming Day) : So will ALL matches be played on one day? I thought Saturday and Sunday is WC3 time at WCA
